Cargo Insurance and Carrier Liability, Explained for Shippers

Insurance is the part of a freight quote shippers understand the least and need the most. Two separate policies matter on almost every load, and they protect very different things. Knowing the difference — and how to verify both — is the single best protection you have.

Cargo coverage vs. auto liability

Cargo insurance responds to loss of or damage to the freight itself while it is in the carrier's care. Auto liability responds to injury or property damage the truck causes to others. A carrier can be strong on one and thin on the other, so look at both.

Neither policy is a blanket guarantee. Every policy has limits, deductibles, and exclusions — commonly for certain commodity types, improper packaging, or losses outside the carrier's control.

The certificate of insurance

A certificate of insurance (COI) is a one-page summary from the insurer showing the policy type, the coverage limits, and the effective dates. Ask for a current one before you tender freight, and confirm the dates still cover your ship date.

  • Policy holder name matching the carrier on your paperwork
  • Coverage types listed, with limits for each
  • Effective and expiration dates covering your shipment
  • Insurer name and contact details
  • Your company added as a certificate holder if you require it

Questions worth asking every carrier

A carrier that answers these plainly is a carrier worth using.

  • Are you the asset-based carrier hauling this load, or brokering it to someone else?
  • What are your cargo and auto liability limits, and are there commodity exclusions?
  • What is the claims process and how quickly is a claim acknowledged?
  • Is your operating authority active and verifiable?
  • Who do I contact if freight is damaged at delivery?

Protecting yourself on the shipper side

Document condition with photos before pickup, package to withstand normal transit, and note any visible damage on the delivery receipt before signing. A clean signature on a damaged shipment makes any later claim much harder to resolve.

Common Questions

Does cargo insurance cover the full value of my freight?

Only up to the policy's limits and subject to its terms. If your shipment's value is high, tell the carrier up front so coverage can be confirmed against your specific load before it moves.

How do I verify a carrier's insurance is real?

Request a current certificate of insurance issued by the insurer and confirm the operating authority is active through the federal carrier registration lookup.
